Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur

Established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the National Order of the Legion of Honour has, since its inception, recognised both military and civilian individuals who have rendered ‘outstanding services’ to the French nation.

It is France’s highest honour.

There are several ranks within the order: Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer and Grand Cross.

Many US Army veterans were made Knights of the Legion of Honour for their part in the Liberation of France during the Second World War.
