Diptyque #4: Susan Eisenhower / Paul Lay

Conference

The 4th edition of the Airborne Museum’s Diptych, a conference on Saturday at the museum followed by a concert at the Château de Sébeville on Sunday, will take place on 9 and 10 November. Susan Eisenhower will be speaking, and pianist Paul Lay will be performing.

This new edition will take place more or less a year after the last one, which saw Marwan Lahoud, then Iris Scialom and Antonin Bonnet take turns at the museum and château of Sébeville, in November 2023. This year, the guests will be Susan Eisenhower and the pianist Paul Lay, who will perform on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November 2024 respectively, a weekend that will serve as the season’s closing event after a symbolically powerful year.

The lecture: Susan Eisenhower, Saturday 9 November 2024, 6pm, Airborne Museum (free)

The name of the granddaughter of the illustrious American general and president Dwight D. Eisenhower is well known to the people of Normandy, as she is still very active in the field of remembrance. Susan Eisenhower was present at the 80th anniversary commemorations, including the unveiling of the statue in tribute to her grandfather on 3 June. In addition, she is a renowned expert in a wide range of fields, including international security, energy – particularly nuclear energy – and US-USSR-Russia relations. She has consulted on numerous occasions for the US government and major media. One of her latest books, How Ike Led, on the other hand, focuses more on her grandfather’s work, and the principles underpinning his most important decisions, both as commander of the Allied Forces and as President. She intends to translate the essence of this book into a lecture, which will take on a very special dimension in this year of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and which will take place on Saturday 9 November at the Airborne Museum’s Reagan Centre at 6pm.

This conference in english will be translated into French live via headphones for those who need it.

The concert: Paul Lay, Sunday 10 November, 11am, Château de Sébeville (€20)

Unanimously recognised as ‘one of the greatest jazz pianists of his generation’ (Le Monde), Paul Lay has won the most prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros in 2014 for his album ‘Mikado’, which sets him apart on the international scene as a creator. A regular guest abroad, Paul Lay has performed in New York, Toronto, Berlin and Warsaw. He has toured in Germany, Russia, Peru, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, China and Japan. In 2024, Paul Lay signed part of the soundtrack for Mark Gill’s film Ravens, presented at the Cannes Film Festival. This is also the year in which he will revisit George Gershwin’s groundbreaking 1924 work Rhapsody in Blue, which helped to break down the boundaries between jazz and symphonic music. He will be performing at Château de Sébeville on Sunday 10 November at 11am, an event for which admission is €20, and free for under-14s. The concert will be followed by a buffet for an additional €12.
