90th Infantry Division

90th Infantry Division

The US Army's 90th Infantry Division was activated on March 25, 1942, as part of the expansion of US ground forces. After a period of organization and training in the United States, the division was assigned to the European theater of operations and left the American continent in early 1944. It landed in Normandy between June 6 and June 10, 1944, for Operation Overlord.

From the summer of 1944 onwards, the 90th Infantry Division was engaged in combat in Normandy, particularly in the bocage sector west of Carentan. It took part in operations to consolidate the Allied bridgehead and advance through difficult terrain heavily defended by German forces. After the American breakthrough, the division took part in the rapid advance across France, crossing several rivers and participating in the liberation of towns and regions located on the axis of advance towards the east.

In the fall of 1944, the division was engaged in the Lorraine campaign, where it participated in fighting along the Moselle River and in operations against German defenses established in that region. It was then involved in operations against the Siegfried Line, contributing to American efforts to break through German fortifications west of the Reich.

During the winter of 1944-1945, the 90th Infantry Division took part in operations related to the Battle of the Bulge, where it was engaged in defensive and offensive missions aimed at containing and then repelling the German offensive. After the front stabilized, the division resumed its operations towards Germany.

In 1945, the 90th Infantry Division took part in the final Allied offensive. It crossed the Rhine, then advanced into western and central Germany, participating in the capture of cities, the reduction of pockets of resistance, and the taking of prisoners until the German surrender in May 1945. After the fighting ended, the division was engaged in occupation duties before being gradually deactivated.

The 90th Infantry Division's service record during World War II includes campaign credits for Normandy, Northern France, Lorraine, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Its operational engagement covered all major phases of the American land campaign in Western Europe from 1944 to 1945.
