School visits

The Airborne Museum is able to welcome children and adults alike, to make them discover the Normandy D-Day in a playful way. The museum has a specific children path. Additionally, a great care has been given to the presentation of the events, in order to be totally comprehensible by children without any risk of exposition to graphic, traumatic or scary elements.

School workshops

Two suitcases have been found in an attic in Sainte-Mère-Eglise: that of Albert, a little boy during the war, and Ryan, a parachute soldier who landed in Sainte-Mère-Eglise on the night of June 5-6, 1944. Found over 70 years later, these suitcases have never been opened. In groups, students are invited to discover and share the lives of our two protagonists, through the objects carefully stored in these suitcases.

This workshop, led by us but also requiring the presence of one or ideally two teachers or chaperones, is combined with a visit (free or guided) to the museum: the group is split in two, with one half going on the visit while the other takes the workshop, and then the roles are reversed.

Organization:

In the first phase (15min), students are divided into two groups of 10-12 (or 20-24), and each group is allocated a suitcase containing 10-12 numbered objects. Each student or pair chooses an object, and must try to determine its nature, its utility, and the context in which it existed, all with the assistance of their teacher.

The second phase involves pooling the results. In turn, and in ascending order of object number, the students/binomials are invited to speak before the rest of the class to share their guesses. The two students with object no. 1 take turns, followed by those with object no. 2, and so on. During this phase, the museum mediator will correct or complete the students’ guesses. The aim is to project them into a totally different era, that of the German Occupation, and get them to exercise their imagination and empathy.

This program is specially designed for primary and early secondary school children.

Average duration: 3h.
